Day in the life of a stylist

May I introduce my new best friend, Sebastian

In our salon we use Wella products. Up until two weeks ago we used all wella branded products.

Brilliance shampoo and conditioners and finishing products like mousse, wax and spray.

We have now moved to a more elite brand Sebastian that come under the Wella umbrella.

These products can only be purchased in salon and are used in accordance to what the client requires. You can mix and match the products to maximise the clients needs.

Before you even shampoo the client, it is important to know what the client wants from their visit.

For example. Mrs Patrick has long, fine blonde hair, damaged from colouring, would like a bouncy blow dry.

I would tailor her shampoo and conditioner to her needs.

Options in foundation range are-
Hyra-for sun damaged dry hair
Penetrate-for chemically damaged hair
Volupt-for volume
Trilliance-for shine
Colour ignight mono/multi-for coloured hair solid/highlighted

I would do my first shampoo with volupt, second shampoo with penetrate. I would condition with with penetrate.

After my client has been brought to the chair and is going to have her blow dry service. What products to use? Options in the flow range are-

Potion 9/potion 9 light-contains 9 botanical oils you hair requires and is like a primer for your hair. Light is for very fine hair.
Taming elixir-for frizzy hair
Whipped cream-not for fine hair.great for curly hair or course hair
Thickify Foam-great for fine hair, put on mid lengths and ends
Stylixor-to add shine

I would use potion 9 light with thickify foam.

Next I’d add a product from the form range. Options are

Volupt spray-root spray for volume
Texture maker-like salt spray for matte beach look
Drynamic-dry shampoo, also good to use before back combing
Mousse forte-great for setting
Microweb fibre-used in dry hair for texturised look.
0 gravity spray-light hold finishing spray
Reshaper spray-anihumidity spray with form hold
Shaper fierce spray- firm hold spray
Texturiser gel- has rubber extract. Can be used on wet or dry hair.
Gel forte-slight shine, great for short hair
Liquid steel gel-for slicked down shiny look
Moulding mud-great for texturised long hair
Matte putty- great for fine hair and matte look
Craft clay- great hold for short hair.

I would use volupt and mousse forte.

I could also pick from the flaunt range

Trilliant- heat protection before blowdrying and straightening
Shine shaker-great for finishing styles and adding shine.
Shine crafter- water based, put on wet hair for smooth shiny finish. Apply for dry hair to define and add hold to finish
Shine define- great for using before tonging or curling dry hair and after styling for hold with shine
Liquid gloss- put on wet hair to defrizz and blowdry smooth

Once my clients hair was blow dried I would add shine define and reshaper.

Since using these products my blow dries are smoother and my clients hair feels better and looks healthier.

I am still getting my head around all the products and I hope in the next few weeks, using the products on myself and my clients I will be able to show you how awesome these products are.

There is one more Sebastian product I need to tell you about. It’s cellophanes. It’s a direct acting hair colouraning gloss treatment that has no ammonia or peroxide, there for no skin test is required. It is applied to wet hair, a plastic cap is applied and you are put under heat for 20 mins and then rinsed. It works much like a quasi colour

So there you have it! Will you be meeting Sebastian soon?

June madness hath begun

This week has been pretty stressful at home with my kids and what not plus work, Eva’s dance school play AND doing a zip line for charity.

This week, for me in work, has been all about lighter, brighter hair and people getting the chop!

On Tuesday I had Amy in for a full head of high lights, 4 inches off her hair and a side fringe.

Thursday I had a lovely client who went from a bob to a funky crop!it took years off her!

My column has been filled to the brim with colour and trims! Yesterday I was so exhausted after a colour correction on platinum blonde hair (it was bubble gum pink when she came in) that I felt like this……

20140607-165218-60738668.jpg

This morning I did a zip line for Jointz, the children’s sub division of arthritis care! My daughter has arthritis so it’s a worth while cause!

You can see my zipline in action on my Instagram page (link on the right)

I went to work after my zipline (after a quick change of shoes) and cut Linzi’s hair even shorter and put in a half head of high lights! You my remember Linzi’s hair from previous blog posts.

My beautiful boss surprised us all with a ring each with our nicknames in it!

I love this and can be bought from Zara Lo on Facebook (link here)

And tonight I’m off to see my eldest do her third and final night in her chitty chitty bang bang performance. She is a rag doll! I’ll put up a link of her practicing on Instagram.

It’s one of mine and her favourite movies so I’m so excited to see her in action!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Hollar!

Ooooooopsie! I forgot to blog….a lot! Last week I can’t even remember what I was doing hair wise so I shall start a fresh on what I did yesterday.

I did a cut and colour on a lovely client. She has been in before to the salon but it was the first time she has been with me.

She got a root tint and highlights, all copper tones.

I then did a colour change on my next client. Her hair had been bright red and she had used a colour stripper at home. This left her hair patchy and multi tonal.

She wanted to be blonde. I evened out the base colour with a chocolate brown and then scattered highlights through the hair.

She will be returning in 3-4 weeks for a full head of highlights to lighten her up some more.

I then did a cut and blow dry on one of my regular clients.

Then I did a full head colour with a few scattered high lights to break it up. While this was developing I have her daughter a dry trim and a Dutch braid.

I then took off the colour and blow dried my client.

All in all a busy day!

Who would like to hear about my trip to Cadbury world in Birmingham? And to the butterfly farm in Seaford?

Vintage Queenie

As you all know, vintage hair scares me. I have been practicing vintage hair up styles for the last few weeks on my training days.

I will never be the Queen of vintage but i will try my hardest to crack it.

Yesterday our lovely friend JoJo came in for me to practice on.

With help from my mentor, and ever patient teacher, Tina, here is what we did.

Two victory rolls and pin curls.

JoJo has amazing hair and was an honour to do her luscious locks.

Here are some vintage styles I’ll be trying out over the next weeks.

Today’s antics

Today we got the letter we have been waiting for for months! Eva’s school acceptance letter.

Luckily we got our first choice of school and she will be going into the year one class of the school in which she attends nursery.

As for work today I did a root tint and part line high lights. While this was developing I did a male cut and blow dry. I then did a cut and blowdry on the lady I was colouring.

My next two clients were no shows and then I did a cut and blow dry using our steam pod to finish and then two children’s cuts. Both of the girls I was cutting had long hair and decided to go for the chop and got their hair cut to their shoulders.

The next two days in the salon are crazy busy but I will keep you updated on what I am doing!

Training day

Today is my training day in the salon. I did one vintage upstyle and one colour, but n blow dry.

I am scared of vintage hair. I am not confident in it at all and even less so when I had someone point out how terrible I was at it.

Nicole was very nice and supportive and even when I was shaking with fear she just let me get on with what I was doing.

I did two victory rolls and bouncy curls. The tools I used were GHDs, tail comb, hair pins and hair spray.

Here are the results

Then Michelle, who does nails in our salon, came in for a colour.

I used a wella colour in intense light mahogany red brown with purple mix tone and slices of plum magma. I trimmed up the back and blended into the sides as she wanted to keep then quite long. Here is the result.

Look how beautiful and shiny her hair is. I have to say that Tina helped me out quite a bit, but that means good learning for me!

We also took this picture of some of team jb. What don’t think?

Hope you all have a good week!
